Also
known as a Silver Leaf Monkey, these primates have a specialized digestive system
to support their diet which is made up totally of leaves. They are born orange
and mature into their adult coat of sliver grey tips on black fur at around
five months. They also sport Mohawk style spiky hair on their heads. They live
in groups of up to thirty individuals including one adult
male.
The entire troop sleeps in a single tree at night. They generally only venture
onto the ground to travel to new trees.
Langurs attract deer because of the food that they drop. This in turn attracts
tigers. When a Langur spots a predator it lets out a loud cry to warn the other
members of its troop. This also alerts the deer. A Langur will not stop shrieking
until the tiger or other large predator is gone and they feel safe again.
The IUCN rates them as Near Threatened in the Red Book of Threatened Species.
